Upon returning to the wheat (which is what was originally used), they found it had already turned stale. Will was the superintendent at the sanitarium and John Harvey Kellog was the physician. John Kellogg and his younger brother, Will Keith Kellogg, happened to leave some cooked wheat sitting out while they took care of other important issues at the sanatarium where they both worked.
